Intermittent Fasting

2023

Brief

Introducing Intermittent Fasting onto the HealthifyMe App.

Research on Addition of Alternate Diets

To better understand user preferences and expand our diet tracking features, we surveyed our users, both free and premium. The survey revealed that intermittent fasting (IF) was the most recognized diet, followed by a balanced diet. Additionally, 45% of users reported currently adhering to a diet. Many users on IF or low-carb diets already use the app despite the lack of dedicated features, indicating a strong interest in these diet types. Importantly, a significant portion of users expressed a willingness to pay for enhanced diet tracking features, highlighting a gap in our current offerings. To address this, we decided to prioritize integrating intermittent fasting into our food tracker.

Assessing Interest

Additionally, we launched a "Join the Waitlist" page to gauge user interest in IF, and the response was overwhelmingly positive.

During our research on IF, exploration of existing apps like Window, Fasting, and Zero provided valuable insights into their functionalities. Additionally, hands-on experience with IF was gained personally. This informed our decision-making process during the design phase and aided in creating a basic information architecture.

Information Architecture

Upon eligibility for the complete IF flow, users are directed from hooks on the dashboard/Food tracker to a landing screen that educates them about IF.

Starting IF Experience

Users can select an IF plan and define their windows. After saving the plan, they can review changes to their meal timings and calorie intake. The logic ensures that any meal falling within the fasting window is disabled.

Setting up IF Plan

After the setup, users are greeted with an IF countdown timer on both the dashboard and the food tracker. Additionally, a quick onboarding of the new fasting or eating card based on their window is provided.

During IF Experience

This page offers daily articles on Intermittent Fasting, along with weekly insights into fasting and eating patterns. Users receive gratification cards at set intervals, with the option to view past fasts.

IF Homescreen

Users are presented with a summary screen in both scenarios to edit their daily logs. Fasting windows start and end automatically without user action. Users are assumed to have completed their fasting or eating window on time unless they choose to adjust it.

Start & End Behaviour

When users end their IF plan on the settings page, their fasting schedule, calorie budget, and meal types automatically revert to their original settings, ensuring a smooth transition back to their regular eating routine.

Settings & Ending IF Experience

Premium users can initiate their intermittent fasting journey at any time and continue learning about IF while viewing their previous stats. Free users would be directed back to the selling flow.

IF Access after Disabling

45% of users who accepted the waitlist joined within a month. Furthermore, 30% of IF users who had never used a food tracker before started tracking their food. Among all users who opened the app daily, 9% utilized IF.

In this project, I collaborated with the product manager and received guidance from my associate design head. Additionally, I worked closely with the developers for testing and design reviews before the feature was launched.

Impact & Contribution

Lapsed IF users were interviewed, with those disabling the feature within 0-3 days surveyed for insights. While many appreciated the simplicity and integration of tracking food and fasting times in one place, some believed it could have been enhanced with motivation features and educational resources on intermittent fasting. Addressing these suggestions, future versions aim to integrate motivational elements and provide support for users to maintain fasting schedules.
